It’s unusual to see outdoor grown cannabis in places like Denmark. The further north you go, the more challenging it can be to get a successful outdoor crop. You need tough genetics which can mature quickly. Autoflower seeds have become very popular with outdoor growers with cold climates.
In this weeks grow, a Seedstockers customer from Denmark grew a selection of Seed Stocker varieties including BCN Critical XXL Autoflower
The BCN Critical XXL autoflower seeds were grown germinated in a greenhouse and grown outdoors.
In extreme northern climates such as Scandinavia, the growers know that the buds simply will never be as big as indoor buds, or outdoor Mediterranean buds and the growing season is short, with frost/snow quite possible in Spring and Autumn.
BCN Critical XXL Autoflower is tough enough to deal with bad weather, and fast enough to grow from seed to harvest in around 3 months outdoors.
Indoors, with 20 hours of daily light and consistently warm temperatures the plants are usually ready to harvest 75 days after germination.
For outdoor growers, autoflower seeds can be planted during the best 3 months of summer weather. They will usually reach around a metre tall, and will produce large 100g+ harvests of dry bud in intense sunlight and warm temperatures with good quality soil.
In less optimised conditions, with cooler Northern European cloudy summers yields will be lower.
The seeds from this weeks blog were germinated in small plant pots indoors to maintain good germination temperatures.
When the seeds had germinated they were placed outdoors with the protection of a greenhouse. The seedlings grew steadily and were placed in large containers of supermarket soil after a couple of weeks. These containers would be the final homes of the plants for the summer months. The plant containers were kept in the sunniest part of the garden and left outside. If frost was forecast the plants were taken into a shed.
The conditions for growing were generally cool and cloudy, though there were some sunny/warm days as well.
The plants grew steadily, they needed little attention apart from an occasional dilute liquid feed from the garden centre during the last 6 weeks. Some growers also use specialist cannabis bloom feeds from the local hydroponics shop.
You can’t do anything if the weather is cool and cloud, but you can sometimes protect your plants from the worst of the weather.
In this weeks grow, the grower was able to take his plants into the shed if a particularly bad storm was forecast, of if frost was expected.
Some growers make temporary shelters from tarpaulins to protect against a bad storm.
Seeds should, where possible, be started indoors to protect the seedlings while they are young and vulnerable.
If possible, grow them for a week or two under artificial light before putting the plants outdoors. This gives the seedlings the best start.
Many photoperiod outdoor varieties are harvested around early October in the northern hemisphere, and early April in the southern hemisphere.
In some countries, winter weather can arrive in October. This makes it a nervous time for outdoor cannabis growers, there are no guarantees that the outdoor photoperiod plants will always be ready in time.
That’s where autoflower seeds are useful, many people harvest them in August, well ahead of the winter weather.
Growers in Mediterranean climates can get two or three successive outdoor auto crops per year.
If autoflower seeds can grow well outdoors in Scandinavia they can produce a harvest anywhere.
If you grow Seedstockers autoflower seeds indoors you can expect XXL results. The genetics are selected to be easy to grow, consistent and reliable.
